Recognize the Presence of a Hazardous Material or Weapon of Mass Destruction. Recognize the presence of hazardous materials and weapons of mass destruction through recognition of dangerous goods containers, locations, markings, labels, placards, etc.

Identify the Hazardous Material or Weapon of Mass Destruction. From a safe distance, use the information recognized in the previous step to identify the hazardous material or weapon of mass destruction by name.

Collect Hazard Information. Upon determining the identity of the hazardous material or weapon of mass destruction, identify basic hazard information using the U.S. Department of Transportation Emergency Response Guidebook or other relevant source such as a manufacturer’s safety data sheet, shipping papers, etc.
