Community Infrastructure Markings

There are numerous types of underground services. One major transportation system in the US for movement of hazardous materials is the pipeline system. Due to this fact DOT (Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration) also regulates pipeline markers and the information they are required to communicate. In general, all underground infrastructure systems are routinely marked with colored stakes and band markings.

Typical colors for community infrastructure markings include:

  • Blue—used to mark potable water lines
  • Green—used to indicate sewers
  • Red—used to indicate electrical cables
  • Yellow—used to indicate gas, oil, and petroleum products
  • Orange—used to indicate telephone, cable, communication lines

In addition to color-coding, pipeline and service markers are required to provide written information such as owner/operator name, a contact phone number, the product or hazard name, and a signal word. |

Signal words can indicate hazard intensity:

  • Danger – greatest hazard
  • Warning – moderate hazard
  • Caution – lesser hazard
