Hazardous Materials Identification System

The Hazardous Materials Identification System (HMIS) is a variant of the NFPA 704 system. HMIS was developed by the National Paint and Coating Association to cover situations that are more common to the workplace rather than situations encountered by HAZMAT responders. The hazard index degrees are:

  • 4 – Severe
  • 3 – Serious
  • 2 – Moderate
  • 1 – Slight
  • 0 – Minimal
