U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Transportation Labels

According to 49 C.F.R. standards, any person who offers a hazardous material for transportation must label the package.

  • Each label should be printed in the appropriate color. The labels should be durable and withstand exposure to transportation conditions. Each side should be at least 3.9 inches long
  • Labels may be affixed to packages when not required by regulations, provided each label presents a hazard of the material contained in the package
  • The appropriate hazard class or division number must be displayed in the lower corner of a primary and subsidiary hazard label
  • DOT identifies the proper shipping label for hazardous materials shipped within the United States
