Hazardous Materials
Hazardous materials and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) incidents are different in comparison to other types of emergency incidents. Hazardous materials and WMD incidents are typically more complex and require specialized training, equipment, and procedures. Some of the hazards in these types of incidents can be difficult to detect, requiring responders to look for unique clues to alert them to the presence of hazardous materials and/or WMDs to shift them into a hazardous materials response. According to NFPA 1072, hazardous material is matter or energy that when released is capable of creating harm to people, the environment, and property, including weapons of mass destruction as defined in 18 U.S. Code, Section 2332a, as well as any other criminal use of hazardous materials, such as illicit labs, environmental crimes, or industrial sabotage.
