Authorized International Regulations

49 C.F.R. has numerous parts that establish Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR).  The regulation maintains alignment with international standards by incorporating various amendments including changes to:

  • Proper shipping names
  • Hazard classes
  • Packing groups
  • Special provisions
  • Packing authorizations
  • Air transport quantity limitations
  • Vessel stowage requirements

These international standards include:

  • The International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code
  • The International Civil Aviation Organization's Technical Instructions for Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air
  • The United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods

It is important to understand how these international regulations affect shipping and labeling of hazardous materials that may enter the United States.
