Using the ERG

The guidebook has been updated from the basic 3-step format to a logic flowchart. The logic flowchart can be found on page one of the new guidebook, and will direct the user to various sections of the book, depending on what information is available during the initial phase of the HAZMAT incident.

It is important to resist rushing in. Approach the incident from upwind and uphill, or upstream and stay clear of all spills, vapors, fumes, smoke and potential hazards. If more than one hazardous materials/dangerous good is involved, do not use the flowchart. The responder should call the appropriate emergency response agency listed in the inside back cover of the guidebook.
