Identify the Material

The placard, orange panel, or shipping papers will provide the quickest and most accurate material identification. Placard, orange panel, or shipping papers can all be found in the following locations.

Remember:

• A placard is found on the outside of the transport vehicle on all four sides
• An orange panel can be found underneath the placard when used, but can also be seen on the placard itself if the placard already has the UN ID number marked on it 
• The shipping papers are usually in the cab of the truck, or the driver will bring them to you. However, if the driver is unconscious or not in the vehicle, search the cab for the shipping papers and call the emergency response number located on them. If no shipping papers are found, immediately call the appropriate emergency response agency telephone number located on the inside back cover of the ERG
