Explosives

According to the FBI Bomb Data Center, approximately 70% of all terrorist incidents involve the use of explosives and incendiary agents. Due to the prevalence of use, individuals need to understand explosives in order to safely respond to an explosive incident.

Early recognition is critical to responder safety. Avoiding areas of explosive devices is by far the best way to protect yourself and others. Isolate the area and deny entry so others do not inadvertently enter the scene and direct those who maybe in the isolation area out of harm’s way. Know your local protocols for proper notification procedures.

Safety Considerations
If you suspect or confirm the presence of potential or actual explosive device IMMEDIATELY REMOVE YOURSELF AND OTHERS IN THE AREA TO A SAFE LOCATION. REMEMBER—if you can see the bomb—the bomb can kill you. Contact the appropriate authorities IMMEDIATELY (police, fire, EMS). Give them as much detail as possible about the location and appearance of the device or suspected device. Make every effort to establish a perimeter around the location of the device. See the ERG for appropriate distances.
