Division 4.2: Spontaneously Combustible Material

Spontaneously combustible materials in this division include:

  • Pyrophoric material—a liquid or solid that even in small quantities can ignite within five minutes after coming in contact with air
  • Self-heating material—reacts when in contact with air and without an energy supply are liable to self-heat

Examples include activated carbon (Hot Hands®), charcoal, and white phosphorus.
