Atmospheric Tank Truck
These trailers are used to transport flammable liquids such as gasoline, diesel, etc. They are easy to recognize from the rear as they have an elliptical or oval cross section appearance. They have “manways” with overturn protection on the top of the tank. They also have visible bottom discharge valves that can give responders a clue as to how many compartments may be in the trailer. According to the ERG, they have working pressures of 3-15 psi, but are generally no more than 4 psi. The common atmospheric tank seen in the US is a DOT 406.
