Atmospheric Pressure Liquid Storage Tanks
| An atmospheric storage tank is commonly used to hold large volumes of petroleum products at facilities and refineries. Common types of atmospheric tanks include:
- Open floating roof tanks have a roof that floats directly on top of product to keep rainwater out and minimize potential vapor space. They may have a visible wind girder around the outside of the tank and a hinged ladder from the top down to the floating roof.
- Covered floating roof tanks have a permanently fixed structural roof on top of the tank with an internal floating roof inside floating on top of the product to minimize any vapor space. Recognizable exterior features to look for are “eyebrow” vents at the exterior roofline to allow air/vapor escape with rise and fall of the internal roof.
- Open floating roof tanks with geodesic domes are basically an open floating roof tank with a visible light weight aluminum geodesic roof structure to shed rainwater.
