Notifications

In a WMD/terrorist event, additional help will be needed. It is imperative that the emergency response organizations know as soon as possible. Begin the notification process as soon as you recognize that a WMD incident has occurred. The response will require additional resources and personnel trained beyond the awareness level. A call to dispatch or 911 requesting notification to other local response personnel, required State agencies, and neighboring jurisdictions. Always provide as much information as possible. This may include

  • Your name, agency, and call-back number
  • Indicators that WMDs were involved
  • Any other indicators that a terrorist incident has occurred
  • Describe type(s) of container(s), or placard(s), if any
  • Severity of the incident
  • Incident location
  • Actions already taken
  • On-scene contact and how to reach this person
  • Estimated number of victims, types of injuries, damage to buildings, etc.
On Scene Actions

If you find yourself in a potentially contaminated area, you should:

  • Move from the area and encourage others, if ambulatory, to move to a staging area away from the immediate threat.
  • When moving from an affected area, scan for secondary devices. There may be multiple devices or booby-traps.
  • Deny access to the public to minimize further contamination and prevent people from becoming additional casualties.
  • Block access to the hazard area using barricades, scene tape, law enforcement, apparatus, etc.
