In Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs), water (primary coolant) is allowed to boil directly in the reactor core.

The boiling water generates steam which is drawn away from the reactor and used to rotate the turbine, which in turn generates electricity via the generator.

Even in non-emergency conditions this water may contain small amounts of radioactive fission products.
