There have been no deaths or cases of radiation sickness resulting from the nuclear plant destruction precipitated by the regional disaster of March 11, 2011. However, as a result of the severe damage to station reactors and the subsequent radioactive material releases, more than 100,000 people were evacuated from their homes.
Due to the dispersal of radioactive material across the regional environs, monitoring of the affected region, emergency workers, and members of the public will continue for many years.
