Protective Actions for Severe Accidents

Typical recommended protective actions following a severe nuclear power plant accident (GE) would be to:

  • Evacuate (or shelter-in-place) two miles in all directions from the plant and five miles downwind (i.e., a keyhole effect)
  • Monitor and prepare in all other areas out to 10 miles

These actions would be recommended, if possible, before a major release of radioactive material. If local conditions prevent evacuation, shelter-in-place may be advised. After the release, additional protective actions might be recommended if indicated by radiological monitoring in those areas.
