Evacuation or Sheltering Still Necessary

It must be understood that use of a thyroid blocking agent is not an adequate substitute for prompt evacuation or sheltering by the general population near a plant in response to a severe accident.

Ingestion of a thyroid blocking agent will serve only to reduce the dose to the thyroid caused by intake of radioactive iodine.

The primary risk to the population from a severe accident is the effect on the entire body, not the effect on the thyroid.
