Contamination of food and water supplies is not a big problem.
Public water supplies will generally be safe for use, and any food or water stored in a shelter should be used.
Uncontaminated food and water supplies should be used first. Thereafter, contaminated supplies should be used. Do not keep anyone from eating or drinking on the basis that supplies may be contaminated. If potentially-contaminated supplies are to be consumed, wash them with soap and water first.
The remote health risks associated with consuming contaminated food and water are preferable to starvation.
