‘Shelter Operations in Bio Environment’ subject of new CDP video

Emergency management trainers from across the country are in the process of putting together a five- to seven-minute video aimed at helping responders safely work in shelters set up to serve those who’ve evacuated from areas contaminated with chemicals or biological agents.

While the video is aimed at all responders, it should be of particular interest to those who would have to respond to a shelter and perform emergency medical or law enforcement tasks, as well as those who have to perform environmental health tasks (i.e. assess food safety, sanitation, and air quality).

The video, which is being developed by FEMA’s Center for Domestic Preparedness in collaboration with FEMA’s Response and Recovery Office, FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute, LSU, and others, will provide responders with an understanding of what to expect when encountering such a shelter operation. It will also teach responders how to coordinate their activities with those of the shelter staff.

The project is expected to be completed sometime this month.
