CDP begins work on HMT refresher course

FEMA’s Center for Domestic Preparedness begins work this month on a web-based refresher version of its resident Hazardous Materials Technician (HMT) Course.

The five-day resident HMT course teaches participants how to respond to a suspected incident at the hazardous materials technician level, in accordance with NFPA 1072 and 472 standards. Graduates can take the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications and the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress exam for HAZMAT Technician certification through the Alabama Fire College.

To maintain OSHA certification, responders must take eight hours of refresher training annually. Once developed, the HMT Refresher distance learning course will have the potential to meet that requirement in a self-paced, web-based format.
