CDP conducts pilot iteration of POPS-Basic
FEMA’s Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) this week delivered a pilot iteration of its new Public Order and Public Safety-Basic (POPS-B) Course.
The class was made up primarily of law enforcement officers from nearby Jacksonville State University; Kennesaw, Georgia; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Chicago, Illinois.
POPS-B will provide law enforcement officers the essential information and skills needed to respond to a civil disturbance. It will become a key part of a multi-course CDP public order policing training program, along with POPS-Intermediate (currently known as Field Force Operations) and POPS-Leader courses.
Once it is ready for implementation, POPS-B will be targeted for law enforcement officers who require baseline civil disturbance training.
The CDP utilizes pilot versions of courses to determine the appropriate flow of the instruction and, based on student feedback, if there are any additional topics or considerations which should be incorporated into the final version.
The resident POPS-Basic Course will eventually include a train-the-trainer course, which will enable participants to become authorized indirect trainers for the CDP, teaching fellow law enforcement officers the skills and knowledge they learned.
