CDP designs virtual version of medical response course

The Center for Domestic Preparedness is working closely with a number of college nursing schools to assist teaching their students medical triage methods and how to care for individuals exposed to or injured from a wide variety of hazards.

As part of the effort, in late July the CDP will provide the schools a virtual, instructor-led version of its Emergency Medical Response Awareness (EMRA) course.

“This training provides students the knowledge and skills to properly protect themselves from patients exposed to a multitude of hazardous materials, including infectious diseases or viral pathogens,” said CDP Assistant Director of Curriculum Development Bernice Zaidel.

Completion of the training is also a pre-requisite for attending the CDP’s Healthcare Emergency Response Operations, or HERO course, which is conducted on the CDP campus.

While the virtual, instructor-led version of the EMRA course was created for the students of its partner nursing schools, Zaidel noted the course material is geared at any responder who may be involved in emergency medical response such as emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics.

Consequently, she said following the initial deliveries of the virtual EMRA course, the CDP hopes to make it available to other responders across the nation.
