CDP finalizes BERT Course updates

FEMA’s Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) recently completed minor updates to its Basic Emergency Response Training (BERT) Course.

The updates to the curriculum were mostly cosmetic but included several changes recommended by those who have taken the course.

The three-day resident course teaches attendees how to identify basic hazardous materials, survey and assess scenes with hazardous materials, triage and decontaminate individuals who have been exposed to hazardous materials, and how to select and operate hazardous materials air monitoring and detection instruments.

BERT’s target students are responders who may be called upon to support mass casualty operations associated with a chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear incident.
