CDP finalizing HERT course changes
FEMA’s Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) is finalizing revisions it is making to its popular Hospital Emergency Response Training for Mass Casualty Incidents (HERT) courses.
HERT teaches healthcare professionals how to operate an emergency treatment area during a mass casualty incident and treat individuals who have been contaminated with hazardous materials. Responders learn to use the appropriate level of personal protective equipment and to decontaminate both ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients.
The in-residence version of HERT on the CDP’s campus in Anniston, Alabama involves three days of lectures and hands-on exercises and is often paired with the HERT-Basic Train-the-Trainer (TtT) Course.
HERT-Basic is a one-day course used during indirect training throughout the nation. It is delivered by volunteer responders who are both HERT and HERT-Basic TtT graduates.
With the update, the CDP will be able to offer a HERT Train-the-Trainer Course also, which will allow the full HERT course to be made available as an indirect offering for agencies which can support the course requirements.
The changes are expected to be finalized this month and implemented with future resident HERT course offerings.
