CDP holds 10th annual Tribal Nations Training Week

The Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) concluded its 10th annual Tribal Nations Training Week today.

More than 250 students, representing 70 tribal nations attended the event, which included training in emergency management and healthcare preparedness and response.

The week began with a formal opening ceremony on Sunday as well as a presentation on the Integrated Public Alert Warning System (IPAWS). On Monday, students separated into 10 course tracks which provided them with disaster preparedness and emergency response information and skills.

The theme of the week – ‘Protecting Traditions by Building Capabilities Through Partnerships’ – was established by a working group comprised of tribal nations responders and representatives from the Rural Domestic Preparedness Consortium, the National Disaster and Emergency Management University (NDEMU), and the National Domestic Preparedness Consortium (NPDC), which includes the CDP. The group identified training gaps, then selected courses from the respective partner catalogs for the week which could help close those gaps.

In the evenings, students were encouraged to network with each other, building relationships across tribal and state boundaries and creating a National Tribal Disaster Compact plan to incorporate disaster preparedness into their planning. They also had additional learning opportunities presented by representatives from Georgia Tech, the Strategic National Stockpile team, Regional Tribal Liaison’s, FEMA Integrated Team members and the Indian Health Service.

The week concluded with a large-scale mass casualty exercise for students in the healthcare tracks and closing remarks from David Arnold, FEMA’s Acting Deputy Administrator for Resilience.

Soon, a focus group will convene to begin work on the next Tribal Nations Training Week, which is planned for the spring of 2026.

CDP training is completely funded for state, local, tribal and territorial emergency responders to include roundtrip airfare, meals, and lodging. For additional information about the center and its training opportunities, visit www.cdp.dhs.gov.
