In the Spotlight: Joel Miller
Joel Miller speaks from decades of experience as he trains law enforcement officers how to safely control crowds at the Center for Domestic Preparedness.
Miller spent more than 30 years with the Harris County (Texas) Sheriff’s Office before retiring as a deputy sheriff in 2018. During his career, he was called upon to lead crowd control teams at two Super Bowls and in the aftermath of three hurricanes – Katrina, Rita and Ike. He also assisted during civil rights protests in the Houston area.
“I find it an honor to have the opportunity to pass on the knowledge and experience I have gained over the past 30 years,” said Miller, who has been a CDP instructor for about 10 years. “I strive to train and educate the nation`s first responders and provide them with the tools to safely protect the public.”
Miller’s background includes attending Texas Southern University from 1977-1980. During his time with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, he also served as a patrolman, shift supervisor, field training officer, academy instructor and counselor and special response group coordinator, in addition to being a mobile field force leader and trainer.
