Snapshot: Hazardous Material Mitigation

Responders practice skills needed to mitigate a hazardous materials release, such as sealing leaks, and overpacking drums used to contain hazardous materials, during the Hazardous Materials Technician (HMT) course at FEMA’s Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP). The CDP’s five-day HMT is based on NFPA® 470: Standard for Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Emergency Response Personnel Professional Qualifications and teaches HAZMAT-specific response concepts and skills, enabling safe and effective response to incidents at the hazardous materials technician level.

Graduates of HMT are also offered the opportunity to take the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) and the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) exam for HAZMAT Technician certification through the Alabama Fire College.

The CDP is authorized to award 4 CEUs for this course by the International Association of Continuing Education and Training. For additional information, or to register for future HMT courses, visit: https://cdp.dhs.gov/training/course/PER-272.
