Overview

The Hazardous Materials Awareness course provides attendees from all backgrounds with knowledge and practical experience in essential, awareness-level hazardous materials competencies as defined by NFPA® 1072: Standard for Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Emergency Response Personnel Professional Qualifications and NFPA® 472: Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents. The Hazardous Materials Awareness course provides students with training to proficiency in identifying hazardous materials; utilizing the U.S. Department of Transportation’s 2016 Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) to identify hazardous materials risks and protective actions, utilizing hazard communication documents to identify hazardous materials risks and protective actions, and determining awareness-level personnel and public protective actions.

Below are some, but not all, of the critical skill sets learned during this training program:

  • Identify hazardous materials and weapons of mass destruction
  • Identify awareness-level personal and public protective actions

Target Audience

The target audience for this course is personnel with awareness-level hazardous materials or weapons of mass destruction responsibilities in their jurisdiction

Prerequisites and Requirements

To be eligible to attend the course, a candidate must have a requirement or responsibility to possess awareness-level knowledge and skills in the identification of hazardous materials and weapons of mass destruction and the determination and communication of associated protective actions.

Continuing Education Credits

The Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) is an Accredited Provider (AP) of Continuing Education Units (CEU) and is authorized to award the following CEUs for successful completion of this activity:
