Overview
The course introduced the fundamentals of shield selection and inspection, safe handling, basic defensive formations (line and wedge), movement drills (forward march, half step, counter column), APR donning while shielded, and a squad‑level instructor assessment where each squad member teaches the practical drill. The course is an entry level, one‑day course focused on fundamentals and safety.
Terminal Learning Objectives
- Consider the legal aspects and the impact of shield use on crowd dynamics.
- Safely select and inspect a protective shield for patrol use.
- Demonstrate correct carrying and on‑guard positions for a shield in squad formations.
- Execute basic defensive formations and coordinated forward movement using shields.
- Don and doff an Air‑Purifying Respirator while controlling a shield.
To be eligible to attend the course, a student must:
- PER-940 Public Order Public Safety: Basic (POPS-B)
- PER-940-1 Public Order Public Safety: Basic (POPS-B) Train-the-Trainer
