CDP adds two HAZMAT tracks for Tribal Nations Training Week

FEMA’s Center for Domestic Preparedness is adding hazardous materials response training to the course selections for the 11th annual Tribal Nations Training Week. The two tracks will enable training for first responders of various experience levels.

The Incident Command and Hazmat Awareness with Train-the-Trainer Track will begin with the Hazardous Material Awareness course, followed by its train-the-trainer class. These courses will teach the skills needed to identify hazardous materials and assess risks, following NFPA® 470 standards. Students on this track will then learn to plan for and manage chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) incidents through the CDP’s Incident Command: Capabilities, Planning and Response Actions for All Hazards course.

An opportunity to train in the nation’s only facility where civilian responders can train with toxic chemical agents and hazardous biological materials will be part of the Hazardous Materials Operations (HMO) Track. HMO provides hands-on training, instilling the skills and knowledge needed to respond safely and effectively to hazardous materials incidents. Training covers personal protective equipment, spill control, decontamination procedures, and incident command system protocols. Through practical exercises, participants learn to manage and mitigate hazmat emergencies in accordance with national standards. Additionally, graduates of this program can take the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (ProBoard) exam for certification at the Hazardous Materials, Operations Level. This exam is an additional cost for students.

The 2026 Tribal Nations Training Week will feature courses in 11 separate tracks: Cyber, Healthcare Leadership, Healthcare Emergency Response, Hazardous Materials, Law Enforcement, Community Safety, Tribal Emergency Operations Planning, Executive, Explosives, Strategic National Stockpile and Incident Command.

This week of training, scheduled for September 12-19, is intended for state, local, tribal, and territorial responders who work in an emergency response capacity and are affiliated with one or more tribal nations or the Indian Health Service.
