Overview

This course covers the foundational principles and practical applicationof comprehensive emergency management within healthcare or organizational settings. Students will explore the four phases of emergency management and learn how to
integrate these concepts into the development of an all-hazards emergency management program. The course includes instruction, case studies, and hands-on activities designed to build the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to assess risks, develop plans, coordinate resources, and implement effective emergency management
strategies across all hazards.

Equip healthcare leaders with the foundational information to develop an all-hazards, emergency management program within their facility or organization.

Provide opportunities to address community wide collaboration in all phases of comprehensive emergency management.

Target Audience

The course is designed for healthcare responders responsible for the development, implementation, maintenance, training, and exercise of healthcare institution and/or corporate emergency management programs and response plans. Healthcare responders may also include senior executives who have ultimate legal and fiduciary responsibility for emergency planning and operations. The following list of potential responders is a recommended pool of positions that would benefit from the training. Primary emphasis should be placed on healthcare facility or system personnel responsible for emergency planning and operations, and state and local emergency management, and public health staff responsible for development, implementation, and coordination of community emergency response plans that include a health/medical response. The target audience includes:


• Healthcare emergency management and/or disaster coordinators
• Healthcare administrators, executives, and directors
• Safety and security managers
• Nurses and nurse practitioners
• Physicians and physician’s assistants
• Facility directors and manager
• Material management personnel
• Information technology personnel
• Pharmacy personnel
• Public relations and information officers
• State and local emergency management personnel
• Healthcare coalition personnel

Prerequisites and Requirements

To be eligible to attend the course, a student must:

A. Have successfully completed ICS (IS) 700 National Incident Management System (NIMS), an Introduction, ICS (IS) 100.HC Introduction to the Incident Command System for Healthcare/Hospitals, ICS (IS) 200.HC Applying ICS to Healthcare Organizations training, and ICS (IS) 800 National Response Framework (NRF), an Introduction.

B. The CDP also recommends that students have a knowledge of their accreditation authority for their agency as well as knowledge of the facility’s emergency management
program, relationship to local emergency management and local healthcare coalition. 

Exceptions to any of the above prerequisites may be granted on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Center for Domestic Preparedness Registrar.

Continuing Education Credits

As an International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) Authorized Provider, the Center for Domestic Preparedness awards 3.2 continuing education units for this program under the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/IACET Standard.
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the University of Alabama School of Medicine and the Center for Domestic
Preparedness. The University of Alabama School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The University of Alabama School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 32 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
